Choosing between an X-Small and Newborn outlet diaper cover? We break down the weight ranges, fit differences, and when to pick each size for your baby.
Quick answer
Choose the Newborn size (4-10 lbs) for tiny newborns and early weeks; switch to the X-Small size (6-12 lbs) for a longer fit window that works from the late newborn stage through early infancy.
Why sizing matters for hook & loop covers
Hook and loop closures offer easy adjustments, but the overall cover size still determines how well it contains leaks and prevents leg gap. A cover that is too large can gap around the thighs, while one too small may leave red marks or not fully cover the diaper.
Decision rules for choosing your size
- Baby weighs 4-6 lbs: Start with the Newborn size. The 4-10 lb range provides a secure fit for tiny babies, especially preemies or early-term newborns.
- Baby weighs 6-10 lbs: Either size can work. The Newborn will fit snugly now, but the X-Small will last longer as your baby grows. If you want fewer covers, choose X-Small. Consider buying one of each to test the fit on your baby's body shape.
- Baby weighs 10-12 lbs: Go with the X-Small size. The Newborn is likely too small, and the X-Small will still fit well through this range. At the top of the X-Small range, watch for tightness around the thighs and move to the next size up when needed.
